Born into poverty, Andersen longed for fame and recognition from an early age; he wanted to go into the theatre, the ballet – onto the stage. So the
14-year-old sets off for Copenhagen penniless to try his luck.
From then on, failure and new beginnings, depression and joie de vivre went hand in hand: whilst he found generous patrons, he also endured harsh training and humiliation. Whilst he became an up-and-coming author, he was denied the love of his life. He incorporated all these experiences, along with the impressions from his
extensive travels, he weaves into his works and becomes a celebrated artist who delights generations of children and adults with enchanting
stories that reflect his personal experiences and his deep love of nature.
Fascinated by the passion and multifaceted artistic output of Hans Christian Andersen, ballet director Sabrina Sadowska
not only brings to life the literary inspirations of the world-famous Danish writer in her new choreography, but also traces the decisive turning points in his life. Through enchanting scenes, designed by Hans Winkler, she tells the story of a romantic soul and an extraordinary life journey. At the same time, she plays with a favourite theme of classical ballet: the fairy tale.
