International research team discovers new geological archive
An international research team has demonstrated for the first time that fossilised wood can preserve the history of the Earth over hundreds of millions of years. The Chemnitz Museum of Natural History was involved in this study, which has now been published in the journal *Scientific Reports*.

Lung Centre expanded
The Pulmonary Centre at the Heinrich Braun Hospital in Zwickau is the latest partner to join the Central German Pulmonary Centre (MLZ). In 2024, teams from Chemnitz Hospital and Altenburger Land Hospital established the first cross-state pulmonary centre in Central Germany.

Outpatient Surgery Centre successfully launched
A few weeks after the opening of Praxiswelt, Poliklinik gGmbH Chemnitz has given a positive initial assessment of its new Outpatient Surgical Centre (AOZ): during the first operation on 29 June, a tumour was removed from a patient’s eye.

Goalball players honoured with an entry in the Golden Book of Sport
Rouven Schetelich and Oliver Hörauf won the silver medal with the German national team at the 2026 Goalball World Championships in China, thereby securing early qualification for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

Development areas on Zwickauer Straße: Here’s what’s planned
Further measures will be implemented in the regeneration areas along Zwickauer Straße by 2032. These are designed to enhance public spaces and support private building renovations, the acquisition of land for project implementation, further conceptual development, and area management by a regeneration body: this section of the road will be redesigned – and the former Rittergutspark will be upgraded.

School sports grounds remain open
At the start of the last school year, a pilot scheme was launched in which the sports facilities at three schools in Chemnitz were opened in the afternoons and evenings for recreational sport. The scheme is now set to continue.

The Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra made its debut in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg at the beginning of July, playing to a sold-out audience of around 2,100 people.

Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy opens
On 1 July, Chemnitz Hospital opened the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at its Dresdner Straße site, headed by Chief Physician Dr Maria Lenk, MD, DDS. With this new department, the hospital is expanding its range of treatments and addressing a significant gap in healthcare provision in Chemnitz and the surrounding area, where psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy have so far only been available on an ad hoc basis.

When the indoor swimming pool is closed
The annual summer closures of indoor swimming pools ensure safe and trouble-free operation on all other days of the year. This is because much of the maintenance work can only be carried out when the pool is drained and the equipment is switched off.
