Construction begins on ‘Moritz am Park’
Mayor Thomas Kütter: “A milestone for the further development of the town centre”
From mid-November 2026, the project and area developer BPD (Bouwfonds Immobilienentwicklung) will resume construction work between Bahnhofstraße and Moritzstraße. Mayor Thomas Kütter announced this today to media representatives on the sidelines of the press conference for the upcoming city council meeting on 11 November.
The city of Chemnitz welcomes the continuation of the ‘Moritz am Park’ housing project in Neue Johannisvorstadt. Mayor Thomas Kütter said: “We, as a city, are delighted that construction on ‘Moritz am Park’ is now continuing. The project is a milestone for the further development of our city centre and a stepping stone towards connecting with the Johanniskarree. It shows that investments in central locations can be realised even under challenging conditions. We hope this will provide impetus for further initiatives in the city centre.”
Rising interest rates, high construction costs and a changed investment climate had recently delayed the project’s implementation. Benjamin Rehle, Head of Project Development for the Eastern Region at BPD, said: “This makes it all the more important for us to stick to our plans and bring the project to fruition, despite the continuing challenging market conditions. With ‘Moritz am Park’, we are creating new housing for a variety of target groups in a central location.”
Over the next two and a half years, the site on Hermann-Fürstenheim-Straße is set to be transformed into a town square surrounded by high-quality residential developments. Plans include 143 flats and seven commercial units in the Neue Johannisvorstadt.
The excavated material resulting from the construction work will be used to backfill the existing excavation pit on Hospitalstraße, and the hoarding there will be dismantled. This will secure the site on Hospitalstraße pending its further development and, in the meantime, enhance the appearance of this area.
