Today, preparatory work to set up the building site will begin at the pavilion on Bergstraße. This will be followed by the renovation work on the former toilet block.
The pavilion is situated on the edge of the busy Schloßteichpark and the neighbouring Konkordiapark. The facility will not be ready for use until the second quarter of 2027, as the necessary infrastructure works cannot be carried out any sooner due to the current construction works under the Chemnitz Model.
The pavilion, together with the entire Schloßteichpark, is a listed building and, according to the heritage conservation plan, must be preserved in its existing form. The aim was therefore to restore its historic use as a public toilet facility. Naturally, modern standards and the necessary accessibility requirements will be taken into account.
Until recently, the building housed a transformer station belonging to the municipal energy supplier. This first had to be relocated. The new compact substation on Bergstraße required for this purpose has been in operation since July 2026.
Once the renovation is complete, two public toilets will be available in the pavilion: a unisex toilet with baby-changing facilities and an accessible toilet. On the side of the pavilion facing Schloßteichpark, seating will also be provided for visitors to relax. Furthermore, there are plans to relocate the drinking fountain currently situated in Konkordiapark to the area around the pavilion.
In the long term, the section of Bergstraße between Konkordiapark and Schloßteichpark will be closed to traffic. The removal of this dividing stretch of road will create a contiguous, extensive green space.
