On Tuesday, 15 September, from around 7 am, the new concrete bridge ‘Am Stadtgut’ will be lifted into place over the Pleißenbach. The structure forms part of construction phase 2.1 of the ‘New Development along the Pleißenbach Green Corridor’ project and represents a crucial link in one of the routes connecting the Flemming area with the southern district of Altendorf. At the same time, the bridge is an essential component of the infrastructure measures required as part of the watercourse restoration.
The new bridge became necessary because the Pleißenbach was widened and ecologically enhanced as part of the restoration work. Due to the widening of the watercourse and the altered course of the stream, the crossing had to be modified and replaced with a new structure. Furthermore, the existing structure, dating from 1915, was given a condition rating of 3.9 during the last structural inspection in 2017. This necessitated urgent renovation and repair work. The new structure thus combines the improvement of the watercourse’s ecosystem with the long-term safeguarding of an important transport link.
Preparations have already been made for the forthcoming hoisting of the concrete bridge, which is approximately 15 metres long and 4 metres wide. Weighing several tonnes, the bridge section will be delivered from the factory in Cuxhaven during the night of 14 to 15 September, lifted from the heavy-goods vehicle by a mobile crane, positioned precisely on the prepared abutments and finally assembled. The complex lifting operation requires detailed planning and close coordination between all the specialist trades involved on site.
The bridge is currently scheduled to open on 30 October 2026. By then, the connection works for the ‘Am Stadtgut’ road and the network of paths in the Pleißenbach Park, as well as various remaining works on the bridge and other surrounding areas, are to be completed.
The total project costs 1.25 million euros and is funded from two sources: the bridge and the outdoor area are funded to 66 per cent by urban development grants, whilst the Pleißenbach itself, as a watercourse, is funded to 90 per cent under the Watercourses and Flood Protection Directive.
