60 roses to mark 60 years of town twinning!

Chemnitz and Ljubljana are celebrating 60 years of twinning this year. To mark the occasion, 60 roses were planted today in the Bürgergarten on Promenadenstraße – a gift from the Slovenian twin town. In the evening, there was a ceremony featuring a true design icon.
Prof. Janez Koželj, former deputy mayor and now an honorary citizen of Ljubljana, with Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky in the Bürgergarten.

The roses, named after Ljubljana, were ceremonially presented by Prof. Janez Koželj, former deputy mayor and now an honorary citizen of Ljubljana. Together with Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky, he planted some of the roses himself. The planting was accompanied by music from the pre-school group at the Schloßstraße nursery.

Afterwards, three guests signed the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz in the Green Salon of the Town Hall: Prof. Janez Koželj, the Slovenian designer Saša Mächtig, and Saša Šavel Burkart, Head of the Cultural Department at the Slovenian Embassy in Berlin.

Particularly in times like these, town twinning schemes are important for strengthening the European ideal.

Chemnitz and Ljubljana have been twinned since 1966, and the partnership remains vibrant thanks, amongst other things, to sporting exchanges, youth exchanges and cultural cooperation.

The anniversary was celebrated on Thursday with a ceremony at the Garagen Campus. Mayor Ralph Burghart welcomed the guests from Ljubljana. Among them was Janez Koželj, the long-serving former deputy mayor of Ljubljana.

There was also a special occasion to mark the event: the K67 kiosk, designed 60 years ago by the Slovenian architect and designer Saša J. Mächtig, has been handed over to the Garagen Campus following its restoration. Saša J. Mächtig was present in person and spoke about the origins and significance of his work. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for a piece of design history in Chemnitz.
